Aaron D. Altwies is the Chief Security Officer for the Architect of the Capitol (AOC). As Chief Security Officer, Altwies is responsible for the agency's security programs and infrastructure, interagency emergency preparedness, continuity of operations, and the management and operation of the buildings, grounds and security enhancements supporting the U.S. Capitol Police.
Professional Experience
Prior to joining the AOC, Altwies served for more than 28 years as a civil engineer officer in the United States Air Force, finishing his military career as a colonel. In his last duty position, he was the Associate Director of Civil Engineers, responsible for assisting the director in providing policy and oversight for the planning, development, construction, maintenance, utilities, and environmental quality of 176 Air Force and Space Force installations worldwide, including unaccompanied and family housing, fire and emergency services, explosive ordnance disposal, and emergency management services. Altwies influenced $8 billion in resourcing for installation support functions and was the lead in organizing, training and equipping a 47,000-person engineering force. He served as the civil engineer officer career field manager for 1,200 active-duty officers. He was a commander at the group and squadron levels and held numerous staff and installation-level assignments. Altwies is an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and has been awarded several military decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service, and Meritorious Service Medals.
Education
Altwies received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree from Purdue University. He has also earned a Master of Military Studies degree from the United States Marine Corps University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He is certified as a Project Management Professional.
