John Adams Building Garage Repair
The structural concrete at the two horseshoe entrances of the John Adams Building garage has significant corrosion. For the past few years, interim measures have been put in place to extend its life. Unfortunately, some areas have deteriorated to the point where interim measures are no longer an option, and parking cannot be supported.
The John Adams Building Garage Repair will replace structural concrete and waterproofing to extend the life of the garage. The rehabilitation will also include the bronze restoration for the existing light fixtures at the east and west entrance as well as the light fixtures and flag poles at the south side of the building.
A temporary construction fence has been installed at the east entrance of the building. This entrance will be closed and under construction, the west entrance to the building will remain open.
In summer 2019, the parking garage was closed. The pedestrian entrance into the building from the garage will be closed for the duration of this project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the work necessary now?
Surveys taken every few months find more and more issues where concrete has deteriorated and it becomes a safety hazard. Major structural failures are becoming imminent and closures are necessary to maintain safety. Parking spaces have been closed to provide "catchment" systems to prevent the hazards associated with falling concrete.
How long will the project last?
The John Adams Building Garage Repair is a two-phase project that will address one entrance of the building during each phase.
The project is expected to be complete by the end in 2020.
What is construction like?
The demolition process used to break up and remove concrete uses high temperature, high pressure water.
What time of day will construction activities occur?
The work will primarily take place 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is a potential for evening or weekend work to take place due to required outages in the building to perform the work or weather delays.
How loud will noise producing activities be?
The level of noise will vary day to day during construction.
