This project will create a stand-alone structure nestled into the landscape that will serve as the new screening area prior to entering the House Wing (south entrance) of the U.S. Capitol.

Roughly 200,000 visitors on official business enter through the south entrance each year. The project will make the United States Capitol Police screening processing more efficient decreasing waiting times, and the new structure will include the appointment desk for the House Sergeant at Arms. Work will also include restoration of the south Olmsted approach walk as well as a much-need restoration to the Cannon-Capitol Tunnel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this be the only entrance into the Capitol when it is complete?

All other entrances to the Capitol will remain operational. For tours, please visit the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center website.

How can Members, staff, and official business visitors enter the Capitol Building?

All other staff and visitor entrances will remain open as normal. In times when the south entrance is not open due to construction work or safety, the U.S. Capitol Police will direct staff and official business visitors to an appropriate entrance.

What are the impacts of this project on visitors and staff?

Impacts on visitors and staff will be mitigated to the greatest extent possible. Entry through the existing south entrance will be accessible during early phases of the project. Pedestrian and vehicle detour routes in and around the East Plaza will be provided by signage. Most disruptive noise producing activities will be conducted at night or during times of congressional recess.

What will the Capitol look like during and after construction?

A construction compound will surround the work site for the majority of the construction phase of the project. The structure will be completed with the highest considerations of historic preservation, protection of cultural resources, and attention to the richness of the visitor experience.

How long will the project take?

The new structure is expected to be operational by early 2029.

How will the Architect of the Capitol achieve its mission to preserve America's Capitol with the addition of the new South Screening Facility?

When the agency undertook the addition of the South Screening Facility to Capitol Square, ensuring compatibility with the Capitol to preserve the visual character of the historic setting and maintain a high level of design quality was considered vital to the national interest.

Through the collaborative efforts of the project team, an architectural form was developed with respect to its scale, details, and materiality which establishes an appropriately compatible and deferential expression in relation to the Capitol and Capitol Square.
